Advisor Food Safety
Since I joined the research group of Martin Loessner at ETH Zurich (CH) in 2006, I am working on the isolation, characterization, application, and modification of bacteriophages. I am fascinated about the mechanisms of phage infection, the interaction of host bacteria and phages, and the concept of exploring phages and phage-derived proteins for the specific detection and control of pathogens. I am excited to work on state-of-the-art phage engineering to develop novel and specific phage-derived antimicrobials for future applications in food, agriculture, and beyond.
Since 2011 I have been leading the Food Microbiology research group at zhaw in Wädenswil (CH). Here, we determine the activity of bacteriophages and phage-derived antimicrobials in challenge tests with food-borne pathogens.
Due to the rise of antimicrobial resistance in many food-associated bacteria, we determine the prevalence of such bacteria in food. If interesting isolates are discovered, a new phage can be isolated to control it...

Food Security and Food Safety have become a global challenge to feed a growing population, the safest and mode sustainable way, whenever and wherever possible.
From mid 2001 to late 2016, I have had the pleasure to focus my activities on the food safety topics of the dairy industry - high moisture foods and RTE product through the International Dairy Federation (IDF) and Food Business Operators (Soparind Bongrain - Savencia, Danone, Nestlé, Barry Callebaut, Danone).
Since early 2017, I do work as food safety microbiologist and hygienist for the different stakeholders of the food industry.
SInce 2010, I am delegate of France at the International Dairy Federation (IDF) for the standing committees on microbiological hygiene (SCMH), harmonization of microbial methods (SCHMM) and analytical methods of dairy microorganisms (SCAMDM). I do represent IDF at Codex Alimentarius working groups and ISO Technical meeting.

Mario is a trained scientist with an entrepreneurial mindset. As an ETH Zurich graduate from the group of food microbiology, he brings an extensive expertise in the detection of foodborne pathogens. Experienced in the supervision of scientific projects, he has worked in multinational teams in Germany, Great Britain and Italy before moving to Switzerland in 2013. His background in molecular sciences combined with microbiology has led him to join Nemis to lead the R&D of the pathogen identification portfolio.
